On May 19, 2021, the Government of Alberta announced the new Alberta Jobs Program aimed at helping private and not-for-profit businesses support for hiring unemployed or underemployed Albertans.

Highlights:

  • Employers can claim up to 25% of an employee’s salary over 52-weeks up to $25,000 total per employee.
  • Employers who hire people with disabilities receive a grant 1.5 x higher than other hires, or 37.5% of their salary up to $37,500/employee.
  • Employers can hire up to 20-employees per intake. That’s up to $1M in potential assistance from the government of Alberta to help with hiring.
  • The first intake will run May 20 up to August 31, 2021.
  • The second intake will run Sept 15 – Dec 31, 2021.
  • Third intake to be announced at a later date.
  • Can be used to cover salary OR training costs.
  • New hire must reside and work in Alberta and cannot have worked for the employer in the last 90-days.
  • Can be used for new and vacant positions.

NOTE: Employers cannot make the claim where the new hire leaves their current full-time position to move on to another full-time job. In other words, eligible employees must be unemployed, or underemployed (part-time) when they are hired by the new employer. Also, owner-managers and self-employed individuals are not eligible for the program, and the program is NOT available for contractors.

Applications started last week, on May 20, 2021, at http://www.alberta.ca/jobsnow.
