BC PST “paused” on Professional Services

At the eleventh hour, British Columbia’s Premier, David Eby’s, announced that the province’s latest expansion of the provincial sales tax (PST) base to many professional services, will be paused due to ongoing trade tensions with the Trump administration and the tariff impacts on BC businesses and individual consumers.

The changes were slated to come into effect on October 1, 2026 based on specific transitional rules (see our previous blog posts’ links here and here), however the implementation of these rules on professional services such as most accounting, tax and bookkeeping, certain engineering/geo-science, architectural, real estate and security services, will be delayed until further notice.

Given the speed of negotiations at the national level, it is impossible to know when this “pause” could be “un-paused”, but it is likely that in the event that a trade arrangement is worked out between Ottawa and Washington, BC Finance would need to give all affected parties (i.e., service providers and their clients) at least a few months’ notice to re-start the implementation lead-time.”
